7 Rules to Follow: Highlight Reels That Get Coaches’ Attention

Your highlight video is often your first impression with a college coach — and in recruiting, first impressions matter. A coach might only give your video 30 seconds before deciding if you’re worth a closer look. These 7 rules will help make sure they keep watching.

1. Lead With Your Best Clips

Don’t build up to your best moments — start with them. Coaches are busy and want to know immediately if you’re at the level they’re looking for. Open with your top 3–5 plays.

2. Keep It Short (3–5 Minutes Max)

This is not a season recap. It’s a teaser. Your goal is to spark interest so a coach wants to see full game film or come watch in person. Get in, show your impact, and get out.

3. Identify Yourself Clearly

Use a simple circle, arrow, or spotlight effect to show who you are in each clip. Don’t make coaches guess — they won’t.

4. Group Plays by Theme or Skill

Organize clips to highlight specific strengths: passing range, 1v1 defending, finishing, movement off the ball, etc. This gives coaches a clearer sense of what you bring to their program.

5. Include Game Context

Show full sequences when possible — not just the goal, but the run that set it up. Show you understand the game, not just how to make flashy plays.

6. Use High-Quality Footage

Blurry or shaky film is frustrating. Use a tripod or a wide-angle camera when possible, and avoid zooming in too much. Coaches want to see the full field and how you read the game.

7. End With Key Info

At the end of your reel, include your name, graduation year, position(s), club/high school, contact info, and GPA (if solid). This makes it easy for coaches to follow up.
